When Steve Jobs took to the stage to herald the announcement that iPad 2 is about to launch the iPad 2, the announcement was not too much of a surprise to anyone.
The original (and current) iPad is still revolutionary and carbved a niche within which other tablet manufacturers still have to catch up ... and I say that as an iPad user myself.
Sure, the iPad doesn't offer everything that a PC does, but with the use of appropriate Apps. then via my iPad v1 I still have complete access to all the software on my laptop or desktop (I use Logmein Ignition).
Apple fans will have been watching out to see what Apple have brought to the iPad 2 and whilst there are some 'nice to haves', Apple has still not offered up extra connectivity via flashdrives to allow more movies etc to be carried on the move.
The big technology news with the iPad 2 is that it now gets an A5 dual core processor, though the original iPad always felt zippy enough for me (even when connecting to my laptop).
Facetime (Apple's proprietary video instant messaging software) comes to iPad 2 through the addition of both forward and backward facing cameras per the iPhone 4 and latest iPod Touch. Whilst the extra hardware is nice, it is somewhat limited when only able to call Apple to Apple ... though there may be more news on opening that up to other OSes in future.
The long anticipated Retina display fails to make it to iPad 2 and the screen is identical to the original (and excellent) iPad.
The dual core processor will be more power-hungry and without re-engineering the battery life would differ tremendously from the original iPads claimed 10 hours usage. Apple have confirmed that the battery life is expected to be the same on the new iPad.
The last remaining points on the new iPad are about the overall design aesthetics. Unlike the original Apple iPad, the new iPad 2 will be available in either black or white and will have a range of (optional) magnetic fold back covers that act as an on/off and have a further use as a stand.
With the new release, the Apple iPad 2 will be around 30% slimmer as well as 15% lighter.
Will the Apple iPad 2 be a success?
Of course it will ... and it deserves to be as it is a well engineered, tactile and useful device in daily use.
Will I rush out to buy the iPad 2
Actually, no I will not. iOS 4.3 will deliver further enhancements to my existing iPad and Facetime and the other technical advances (cameras) will be of limited use.
What I am sorry about is that 3 months after investing in my iPad, there are discount Apple iPads at Comet, knocking over £100 off the price of every iPad in the range. Other retailers are likely to follow.
If I was in the market today, I would rush out and buy the original iPad at the knockdown pricess that are appearing. iOS 4.3 will probably need to be out next week to coincide with the US iPad 2 launch and be the Facetime enabler. Grab the original iPad at the best price that you can .. stocks seem to be generally limited meantime.
