30 November 2010 – Carrentals.co.uk, online price comparison brand leader, is advising ski and snowboarding enthusiasts booking holiday car hire to make sure winter tyres and snow chains are included in their car hire booking or face extra costs and possible non-availability.
Most car rental firms list winter tyres and snow chains as optional extras on ski holiday hire deals, with many customers mistakenly expecting these essentials to be included at the resort in their car hire packages. As a result, holidaymakers are forced to place last-minute orders as often excessive costs, with the possibility that suppliers may have run out. On snowy mountain roads, the wrong tyres can easily cause accidents.
For example, drivers of vehicles rented at Geneva or Milan may not be planning on driving in the mountains and winter tyres are often only necessary on mountain roads. As a result, a specific order is necessary, with booking in advance to ensure availability and a reasonable price highly recommended.
Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk Gareth Robinson reports legal requirements on winter tyre usage can be confusing as the relevant laws vary country to country. A hire car booked in advance online for collection at the destination airport or resort may not be automatically fitted with winter tyres, as these are often part of a ‘snow pack’ available as an add-on at extra cost, dependent on the supplier.
Some examples of legal requirements and recommendations for the use of winter tyres are as below:
Country - Winter Tyres Requirements
Austria - Compulsory from 1st November to 15th April
Canada - Not mandatory, but highly recommended for snowy conditions and mountain driving.
France - Not mandatory, but recommended for mountain driving or snowy conditions,
Italy - Recommended during the winter months due to unpredictable weather conditions.
Sweden - For Swedish-registered vehicles, mandatory between 1st December and 31st March
Switzerland - Not mandatory but, if involved in an accident, drivers may be fined for not using winter tyres.
Germany - Not compulsory, but drivers may be fined for not having fitted winter tyres if involved in an accident
USA - Not mandatory, but recommended for mountain driving or snowy conditions.
To ensure safety while driving in wintry conditions, in addition to fitting winter tyres it is recommended snow chains are carried at all times and fitted when necessary.
Gareth adds, “Snow chains can be rented as an add-on ay extra cost when hiring a car, but, as each company has only a limited number of sets, it‘s easier and cheaper to buy a set locally. Most supermarkets stock snow chains in winter and these can be returned if not used,”
