Fabio Fabio Fabio.

I just dont know. You have the imposing style, you have pedigree, you have history - but you dont have ability when it comes to International management. For those of you that dont follow this blog, I chastised Mr Capello at some length during the Group games (you can read it here), but I still thought that you had the experience to take our best players and mould them into a team.

I still thought you could - if anyone could - get Lampard and Gerrard to play together. I thought that you would be able to make a defence made out of some of the Premier Leagues best defenders impenetrable. I thought that you would be able to make our wide men aggessive and fearless and our forwards the scourge of oppostion defences throughout the world.

At first, when I was watching the game, I thought the players were to blame. Again, there seemed to be a lack of confidence, a lack of pace, a lack of effort. But then I realised that as manager you probably sat in the changing room before the game and outlined your plan. You probably used chalk boards and pens and arrows and maps and everything at your disposal. Even David Beckham. You would have got these players to a state of frenzy for the most important match that a lot of them have ever played. And indeed, will play.

So, when I started watching the game and we went 2-0 down I started blaming the players. How wrong I was. Its an easy thing to do - to shout at the telly in a pub full of fervent England fans. I wont have been the only one to do it. And then it struck me. Its not the players, Fabio. Its you. You probably (and would hope, definitely) thought that you got these guys ready for the game. And when they went out, yes we had most of the possession. They kept it well, we played a very European type game - holding possesion, not being afraid to pass it backwards or sideways. Being patient and looking for the gaps.

And we went 2-0 down. But it was not over. I still believed. Most of us still did. Thats what being an England supporter is about - we are never going to play like Brazil or Argentina. We are never going to be a team that plays with flair. but we are an honest team. A team that rolls its sleeves up and gets involved. A team that will throw their faces into tackles, will battle, will challenge.

Well, we used to be.The problem is Fabio is that those players think they know more than you. How many of them actually followed your plans? Gerrard and Rooney certainly didnt. They definitely thought they knew better than you. It would appear that the players listened to your pre match talk and then decided that they knew better. How else can you explain Rooney being so deep to get the ball that we didnt have an attacking option? How can you explain Gerrard pinging 'Hollywood' balls across the pitch instead of looking for the simple pass, or his insistence of shooting anywhere from 40 yards from goal? How can you explain that with 25 minutes to go, Ashley Cole, John Terry and Glen Johnson all thought 'fuck this - I'm going up front?'

You cant. And the the reason that you cant is that the players dont believe in you - they believe in themselves and they believe that they know better. So, I started to blame the players, and then realised that its not the players. Its you. Its your inability to gain their trust. Your inablility to instill confidence and trust in them that you know best. Your inability to make these players - the best players England has to offer - believe in you. And that, Mr Capello is why you should go. You should go now. You should cancel your contract. You should walk away. Some footballers just dont cut it at some teams, like Forlan at Man Utd. And equally some managers just dont cut it when they come to International level. You're in danger of being another Erikson, although without the success. Even saying that sounds wierd.

So Fabio. its time to go. The players dont believe in you. I dont believe in you, and if you cant get the best out of this squad, then you arent going to get anything out of future squads, because we look really really thin on the ground when it comes to players coming through. Thanks Fabio and enjoy the cash. I am going to apply for your job officially, as I think if you can do it, I can do it. You can even follow my progress on here. So, enjoy. So long and thanks for the memories. Close the door when you go.
