There's a shortage of kittens in the UK!

Having had pleas for help from a number of people over the last few months, there's only one conclusion to draw! There are fewer kittens around than ever before! I'm not talking about pedigree kittens, of which I'm sure there are plenty still, but the humble moggy!

It appears that offering free neutering in some areas has been ultra successful and there's now a shortage of kittens available. There are of course always people whose cats haven't been neutered but it seems a demand for kittens has over stretched this supply and now there are people waiting for kittens. Here at Pet Freebies we get contacted by lots of people asking for information on free pet neutering too - so there's a realisation that cats should be neutered to avoid the tricky problem of getting rid of kittens.

However if the trend continues - and people start to realise that there's a high demand, will they breed their un-neutered pets just to provide some fluffy cute kittens? It's been reported that one pet shop is selling kittens - normal non-pedigree ones - for £15 each! That's a massive amount of money for something that you used to struggle to give away. Perhaps this will encourage people to not neuter the cats they do get.

It is tricky to strike the right balance - but cats are useful and do have a role in the eco-system. Whilst they catch birds and kill them, they also keep the rodent population under control. With fears about less frequent bin collections causing more worries about rats, should we really be reducing the number of cats within the country?

It is right to neuter most cats. Unwanted kittens cause immense heart-ache, and they soon become expensive to keep. For most people their cat having kittens is a problem, for those wanting cute kittens it's essential!
