Friday 5th March 2010 sees the official launch of the latest Nintendo console to hit the shelves, in the form of the Nintendo DSi XL, which comes in 2 colours, Wine Red DSi XL and Dark Brown DSi XL.

In an unusual step for new hardware, Nintendo have taken the decision to increase the size of the console, bucking the trend of all previous upgrades.

What are the reasons for this? Not exactly clear, however, the fact that the only 2 colours available are also rather conservative (some may say dull) to say the least, hints that they are particularly aiming the DSi XL at the older generation of gamers.

The recent advertising campaigns and many of the top games on the DS now focus on puzzles and mind training, such as the hugely successful Professor Layton, so really it comes as no surprise that the main enhancement is the size of the screens, up 93% from the original Nintendo DS. The 2 screens on the DSi XL are both 4.2 inches, and this is accompanied by a longer Stylus and new longer Touch Pen (40mm longer).

How much will it cost?

The RRP quoted for the Nintendo DSi XL is £159.99, and many retailers are pitching in at this price, at least for the launch. However, top UK Online stores such as Game.co.uk and Amazon have always had their Pre Order price at at least £10 off this, but what is clear is you're not going to get much change out of £150.00.
