Almost 1 in 3 say that they have been a road rage incident victim
50% share they are frightened to drive on British roads because of the way others behave
Three quarters of participants share they are stressed or angry due to the way other people drive
Three quarters say penalties for dangerous drivers should be tougher

21 January 2011 – In spite of several Government road safety campaigns running, 50% of those who took part in the survey, which saw almost 2,000 participate, said that due to the dangerous actions of other drivers they were worried about driving on UK roads. Additionally, 1 in 3 people revealed they had at some point been a victim of a road rage incident.

The new survey was conducted for famous car hire comparator Carrentals.co.uk, and involved people from around the UK provide details about their personal experiences on the UK’s roads. Three-quarters shared that they felt angry or even stressed due to the hazardous manner in which others drove.

The findings are not entirely surprising given that 92% of respondents have seen other motorists speed in 30 mile an hour areas; 80% admit to have seeing drivers on a motorway weave around traffic to get ahead; and 77% reveal they have seen motorists tailgate at speeds that exceed 70 miles an hour.

Combining this revelation with the fact that 50% have witnessed motorists going in the wrong direction on a one way street, and 17% seeing drivers do the same on a motorway the likelihood of an accident occurring is very high.

A large number of incidents related to road rage were reported through the survey from people being intimidated verbally and having their vehicles attacked to reports of physical violence such as being bullied, punched or kicked in public, and even reports of being forced off the road or being followed by other drivers. The survey also found that car jacking was experienced by 6% of respondents or someone they knew.

Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson shared, “We all realise that it can get very busy on Britain’s roads, but the real danger we face is how other drivers behave. Through the survey we found that some unbelievable actions were carried out by others such as intimidation and even physical violence which was once never heard of.”

In addition to aggression, the survey also found many incidents showing that many drivers were not paying enough attention when driving regardless of there being many campaigns of safe driving. For instance, 93% shared they had seen motorists chatting on their mobile when driving. Other distractions that were reported included: drinking coffee; eating food; putting makeup on; attending to arguing kids; admiring attractive males or females passing by; and fiddling around with radios or sat nav systems.

Three quarters of those who participated in the survey said they believed that to encourage safer driving that penalties should be a lot harsher for those who drive dangerously.

Gareth went on to say, “It seems even though many campaigns for safe driving are around, many people just keep putting their own lives and others at risks through their dangerous acts behind the wheel. It is unimaginable to think some motorists would even consider going up the motorway the wrong way or physically or verbally attack someone, however many do not seem to realise the tragic consequences their actions could have.”

“Road safety organisations, the Government and others in the area should continue to highlight the many dangers so others can take a look at their actions and how they will impact others on the road.” Gareth added.
