• 84% say they are worried about cutbacks by the Government
• 69% do not believe the Government is being honest about cutback extents
• 56% say they are concerned about the security of their job due to cutbacks
• 77% expect they will be worse off each month by up to £300 because of cutbacks
• 50% share they believe the economy will be harmed due to cutbacks
27 January 2011 – With the local authorities axing thousands of employees, UK unemployment rates have shot up to 2.5 million, combined with the fact inflation has gone up to 3.7%, the new survey, which saw 2,000 take part, highlights many are getting more and more anxious about cutbacks made by the Government.
The new survey was carried out across the UK, for top money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk and found 84% of respondents were concerned about the planned cutbacks, and 69% admitted they did not feel the Government was being totally honest about to actual extent of the planned cuts.
Simon Terry, Managing Director of DiscountVouchers.co.uk stated, “The actual scale of the planned cutbacks is becoming a big concern. We have already witnessed county councils axing thousands of staff members, this combined with increased inflation is resulting in many people being worried about the future of their jobs and finances.”
The national survey also revealed that 77% think they will be up to £300 worse off on a monthly basis because of cuts; 11% think they will be worse each month by up to £1000; and only 10% believe the cutbacks will not impact their finances.
56% of those who took part in the survey revealed that they were concerned about the effects the cutbacks would have on the security of their jobs. 63% revealed that either someone they knew of themselves worked in the public sector and were worried about the safety of their job.
With many people beginning to be concerned about their jobs and financial situation the survey also found that many were delaying life changing events as well as large purchases. For example, 40% are not going ahead with home improvement; 38% will be delaying buying a holiday or a new car; 22% will be holding off moving house; 17% will not change their jobs; 7% will delay having a baby; and 7% have decided to put off their wedding plans.
Simon continued, “The uncertainty of the Government cuts and the impact they will have is creating major worries for many people. A large amount of the people we spoke to for the survey shared that they are expecting the cutbacks to be more severe that the Government is letting on. As a result many people are getting ready for tough times.”
The survey also asked people where they would like to see the Government make cuts instead. Results included: the benefit system (68%); local councils (41%); the armed forces (21%); the public services sector such as waste collection (14%); NHS (10%); education (9%); and policing (8%). Other areas participants expressed included the expenses and salaries of MPs and bonuses for bankers and quangos.
50% of survey participants stated that they believe the cutbacks will damage the UK’s economy, whilst 46% admitted they thought they were vital for the economy. 37% said they did not think cutbacks were necessary for the economy.
