1 February 2011 – British motorists have responded to a new Carrentals.co.uk poll and said that being unfamiliar with the area, driving on the opposite side of the road to the UK and not being sure of the rules are the major stressful parts of driving when on holiday.

The main problems that British motorists were concerned about when driving abroad were 10% of people found driving on the right hand side of the road a problem, 14% were concerned about not knowing the rules of the road, 26% found local drivers' actions to be a worry, and 47% did not like driving in unfamiliar circumstances. The results were found by the car hire comparison website poll.

Carrentals.co.uk's managing director, Gareth Robinson commented on the poll: “Driving abroad can be a stressful time, but taking it easy, looking at your route before setting off and giving yourself enough time to get to your destination can help calm the nerves. Hiring a car is a great way to see more of the area you're visiting and by booking early there are some great deals to be had.

“Another way to make car hire affordable is to look at the insurance policies. Almost always, excess insurance is more expensive through the car hire companies and it isn't always comprehensive. Adding insurance through a third party is much more beneficial and cheaper. If you already have a third party insurance policy, it is not necessary to take the hire company's insurance, even if they insist – although it is advisable to take the policy with you when collecting the car.”

To help British motorists have stress free driving when on holiday, Carrentals.co.uk has put together a list of top tips:

• Do some research – when driving in a country you're not familiar with. Read up on the road rules and learn the road signs to help you be prepared. When driving on the opposite side, take some time to learn the car and if you can, some drivers feel that driving a left-hand drive car first helps them adjust.
• Plan your route – read a map before you depart and make sure you know the roads. This will make the journey more enjoyable. If your map reading skills aren't great, sat navs can be hired to help out and are excellent if you're travelling alone.
• Split the journey – Enjoy the journey rather than just get from A to B. Stopping on the way to your final destination is a great way to see more sights and take a break from driving, which ultimately benefits the holiday.
• Prepare yourself – having your driving license on you is the law in most countries and it's best to be prepared by having your insurance documents and rental agreement for the hire car available too. If you're driving abroad in wintry conditions, then stock up with de-icing equipment, a torch and a blanket, just in case.
• Insurance coverage – Collision Damage Waiver and Third Party Liability is usually the normal insurance policy when hiring a car in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, South Africa and Europe, but in some countries there is no insurance. Using a a third party insurer is a wise choice to be protected if the worst happens. Refundable Excess can be claimed back for any vehicle damage from a 3rd party insurer, instead of having to pay for it yourself.
