Mobile broadband is any high speed Internet connection accessible in a completely wireless environment. It is basically accessible in a laptop or a PC by connecting a broadband dongle (USB Modem). Whereas fixed line broadband uses fibre optic cable or copper telephone wires for connection , mobile broadband uses mobile phone network standards like GPRS, 3G, WiMAX, UMTS/HSPA, EV-DO to offer better consistency in speeds and connectivity. I have been using a mobile broadband from Vodafone for almost a year now with a speed of 7.2Mbps. I had taken the connection for 24 months for which I got the dongle free along with a usage limit of 3GB per month. With Mobile broadband I  can now access Internet anytime and anywhere.

Mobile broadband is all set to revolutionise the way we access broadband Internet. The market is expected to grow on a large scale in the coming years with increase in  demand from emerging markets. It's not that it will replace  fixed line connections very soon, but will certainly be very popular as a very flexible alternative.  Cabled connections at home and offices are fixed and hence provide no mobility. With Mobile broadband deals, users can enjoy  much more flexibility and mobility. Apart from that, one can also gets free from  messy wires. There are more than a dozen mobile broadband service providers in the UK and Virgin, T-Mobile , Vodafone, Orange and O2 are some of the more prominent ones. All these have come out with various deals that are available as both Pay as you go or Pay monthly options. Moreover there are various plans that offer different usage limits.

The Digital Britain project aims at providing 100%  broadband coverage throughout UK, with a minimum speed of 2Mbps by 2012.  The government knows that mobile broadband will play a very key role in achieving this end, specially in spreading broadband coverage in more remote areas of the country.
