13 January 2011 – The UK's leading money saving website reported consumers snapping up late Christmas deals and a 500% increase in January savings on high-priced goods in time for the 2011 VAT rise.
It was found that the most popular purchases were holidays, white goods, health & fitness memberships, TVs and computers, and the average transaction value rose by 39%; showing a demand for pre-VAT purchases on higher value goods.
Over the festive period and into January retailers saw a rise of 600% in sales, coupled with a stark increase in the popularity of voucher codes, which had seen retailers offering up to 70% off items. The main areas where consumers have been saving are in food & beverages, experiences and gifts.
