www.limerickcentral.co.uk is something a little bit different on National Poetry Day.

“Limerick Central is a website which started as a bit of a laugh, to be honest”, said Ed McCabe who runs the site together with his brother, Jim.  “It’s quite new and still fairly small and is dedicated to promoting the use of limericks to satirise current news events.”

“It already has a small, dedicated following and creativity is encouraged through a free to enter, weekly competition with a small prize.”

“Most of the best ones are posted on the home page but there are many more in the ‘Others we liked’ section.  As membership grows, we expect the level of competition will intensify.  Let’s face it, there’s some cracking material out there with a political or some other sort of scandal around every corner!”

“We’ve already made great sport out of the Pope’s visit, the Commonwealth Games, the Labour leadership contest and now the Tory Party conference, among other things.”

“If National Poetry Day stirs your muse, visit www.limerickcentral.co.uk and either get writing or just have a laugh.”

“And remember.....

You may like your Yeats and your Hughes

But a limerick about an MP on the booze

May not evoke Lear

Though you’ll snort in your beer

When he’s poetically thumped by the muse”

Note to Editors

Please feel free to use the examples below or any others from the site that you like.

“The Irish banks have been a bit rash

It’s like after a huge night on the lash

Take your wallet and check it

Bejaysus, ah feckit

Sure I can’t have spent all of that cash”

“So as not to cast Ed into doubt,
Brother David has gone - with a pout
And a tip to be sure
Not to let the street door
Hit his arse as he made his way out”

“Privacy” wail Wayne and Colleen
“Let us sort this out, please, press unseen”
They weren’t so wary
Oh, on the contrary
With their wedding in a trash magazine
