Look after your pets in hot weather. Ensure they have plenty of water available to them. Don't leave them locked up in the car during hot weather. Even leaving the window open in a car doesn't provide enough cooling air for your pet. Don't take them out on journeys in the car unless it's essential - or you can keep them with you all the time.
Make sure you take out a bottle of water and a bowl so they can have a drink. There are some handy carry devices available to make this easier but make sure your pet is happy with it before relying on it on a hot day.
At home ensure that there is plenty of clean fresh drinking water every day - not just on the hot days. Check it often during heat waves though - pets can quickly empty the bowl, or even a spill could be a disaster if it leaves your pet without water.
Don't encourage dogs to jump into cold water in rivers or lakes when it's hot. Whilst you might think your dog needs cooling down the sudden temperature difference might be too much for them! Always make sure your pet can get out of water if they go in - keep your dog on a lead along steep sided sections of lakes or rivers. If your pet gets into trouble then don't go in after them. Try to reach them from the bank.
