Growing Basil from seed is something worthwhile doing if you love eating fresh basil. A packet of seeds and compost works out great value compared to the many tubs of basil you're likely to buy each year.
You don't need proper plant pots - you can use any container that has holes in the bottom. Basil likes to be well drained - it doesn't like its leaves or roots getting wet for very long!
Fill your containers with soil, firming it down and then thinly add a few seeds. Be frugal with the seeds if you want to grow lots of pots of it. It's easy to go overboard and fill one pot with an entire packet of seeds. Plant a couple of pots every week throughout the summer - starting early as it's happy indoors on a windowsill.
The seeds take about a week to germinate and then need careful watering until they're big enough to use. Growing basil is easy and it smells so delicious when freshly picked and used that you will grow this one herb every year! It's a delightful gift to give too - find some pretty pots and pass on a basil plant to your friends. They'll be impressed you've grown it yourself!
