From Tower Hamlets to Kathmandu – Leaders in Community youth visit Nepal
24th November 2010
This September 7 young people from Tower Hamlets jetted off to Nepal to participate in a 10 day cultural exchange programme. These youth are active members of local youth led organisation Leaders in Community (LiC), which was established in 2008 to enable and empower young people to take up leadership and management roles in decision-making structures in the local communities and therefore increase their opportunities of employment.
The project was initiated by a British youth volunteer, Helen Putnam, who wanted to link young people in London with young people in Kathmandu. Working for a human rights focused youth led NGO, Youth Action Nepal as part of a Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) placement, Helen contacted LiC Project Manager Momtaz Begum and together they designed a 10 day programme designed to empower young people from the UK and Nepal by developing their skills in leadership, as well as soft skills such as confidence, relationship building, communication and social awareness. The project also aimed to encourage these young people to become global citizens through engaging and educating them about youth issues in different contexts and cross cultural learning.
As well as learning about the local culture, the young people visited a number of different youth organisations based in Kathmandu, joined 12 young Nepalis for an International Youth Leadership Camp and visited a rural community school.
Project Manager and LiC founder, Momtaz Begum says: “This trip was a fantastic opportunity for the young people to really get out there and experience a completely different way of life. Working with Youth Action Nepal and building relationships with the young Nepalis really opened their eyes to the problems Nepalis face on a daily basis. We were all overwhelmed by how some people live in Nepal, how little they have, yet how close their communities are and the level of respect people have for each other.
“It was interesting for us to see that young people in Nepal are affected by similar issues to young people in our community, and seeing how people live out there made us appreciate the material things we take for granted.”
Inspired by their incredible journey, LiC volunteers are now planning on fundraising for the school to give more children in the community the chance to stay in education for longer. They are also keeping in touch with their new friends in Nepal, and planning on the next stage of the cultural exchange. This will hopefully take place in 2011 and will see the young Nepalis visiting and learning about life in Tower Hamlets.
