£5,000 has been raised for children living in the Kibera slum in Nairobi by leading fashion retailer, Hervia.

Hervia stores across the North West and London have been giving away necklaces to customers in exchange for donations of £4 or more to raise funds for Kibera in Need. The necklaces are hand-made by children living in Kibera using paper, which is rolled to create decorative beads.

So far, over 1,000 necklaces have been distributed to customers to raise funds for the charity, which supplies funding and support for families living in the Kibera slum.

Hervia has been supporting the charity for five years and the company’s chairman, Richard Duncalf, is a trustee.

Richard said: “The Kibera in Need charity provides a much needed service to people living in deep poverty within the Kibera slums.

“We’re committed to supporting the charity and our loyal and generous customers have shown the same commitment to the cause by giving generously in exchange for these beautiful handmade necklaces.”

Kibera in Need provides a weekly meal and counselling to children living in the slums. It also provides funding to help children continue their education and helps adults run their own small businesses.

Singer and TV presenter Mica Paris is a patron of the charity, which is based in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Celebrities including Lenny Henry, highlighted the plight of people living in the Kibera slum this year as part of the Comic Relief fundraising efforts.
