E-Sphere shares Eyola’s passions aside from fashion. The Foundling Museum is a hidden gem in London that is dear to Eyola’s heart. A charity, and also a museum, The Foundling is a rich mix of eighteenth-century art, music, interiors and textiles which take you on the most captivating journey into how three men from different backgrounds: its campaigning founder the philanthropist Thomas Coram, the artist William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel took it upon themselves to support, through their art, Britain’s first’s children’s charity; which continues today as the children’s charity Coram.
Unravel the story of how textiles was used to identify babies and children, how they raised money for the abandoned children and the most fascinating method in which babies and children were chosen in cases where the child had a mother but the mother could not support the child. As well as the art collection given by benefactors including Hogarth, Gainsborough and Reynolds, the Foundling Museum contains material relating to the personal histories of the thousands of children cared for in the hospital between the 1740s and 1950s, including oral histories, photographs, archival material and artefacts.
Unravel the story at The Foundling Museum’s “Thread of Feeling” exhibition, which runs for 5 months from 14 October 2010 to 6 March 2011. Enjoy an afternoon of art, music and history whilst supporting Coram charity.
