The largest use of water in the home is the toilet flush (UK Government www.water.gov/edu). Within the average household, toilet flushing accounts for 30% of total water usage with somewhere between 2 and 5 gallons per flush depending on how old the toilet is. New Eco-sense toilets, which can now be found at retailer bathrooms4all, use up to 33% less water than standard toilets.
This is achieved through the use of a dual flush mechanism, which is commonly found in continental Europe where water is more sparse than in the UK. The dual flush toilet system can be used as a whole flush, which uses between 3 and 6 litres of water, or a reduced flush system which only flushes until the user removes their hand from the button. Martin Chalcraft, the managing director at bathrooms4all said, "it's obvious that these toilets are the future and rightly so. There's no need to be wasting so much water when the technology is available to significantly reduce this". All the bathroom4all ecosense products have been designed in house and new designs have been commissioned building on the success of the current range. The ecosense principle is now being implemented in baths and showers in an effort to really reinforce the green agenda at bathrooms4all.
But it is not just the water saving that makes the ecosense bathroom range appealing, there are significant cost savings also. A survey by energy firm USwitch recently discovered that the average home flushes the toilet 35 times at a cost of 1.52 pence per flush. The average bath use is only 2 but using a massive 80 litres per bath costs almost 15p per use. Similar significant figures can be found in kitchen appliances and showers. The effect of this is becoming more substantial due to the implementation of water meters in modern homes, charging for usage rather than a standard fee. In a startling statistic, they found that many people around the world exist on less than 10 litres per day, the same amount that can be flushed away in one flush of a traditional toilet.
Bathrooms4all are developing the range for the new season, hopefully expanding the current selection of baths, showers and toilets to include other items such as taps. Although there is evidently still a long way to go, bathrooms4all have joined other firms in taking the initial steps to aid the consumer in saving water, energy and cost in the home.
