All passports issued within the UK since March 2006 contain biometric technology, meaning they feature a chip which contains information unique to the holder – such as facial features. This information can be read using Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. This information could be used to clone a passport. With RFID reader technology, the criminal does not even need to be in possession of the biometric passport, but can download information from a distance of a few metres.
