Children’s National Medical Center and New York University has found that lap band surgery is effective weight loss surgery for the morbidly obese teenagers. The study was done on the 50 girls and boys at age between 14 to 17. They have lost good amount of weight in two years. They have reduced android fat which is responsible for the obesity related illness such as diabetes, heart disease and insulin resistance. Evan Nadler, MD and pediatric surgeon at Children’s National has said that after lap band surgery teenagers has shown improvement in overall health and weight loss.

The study has found that the lap band surgery improves glucose metabolism and reduce the risk of developing insulin resistance. After the surgery the bone mineral density was not impacted and bone growth is also not affected. It is now recommended to the young people for lap band surgery who are highly obese and their body mass index is more than forty. For the teenager it is done laparoscopically to reduce the risk and lap band side effects.

During the procedure lap band is placed around the stomach which restricts the amount of food. It is a reversible procedure so patient can remove the band if they lose desire amount of weight. After the surgery they have to change the diet and living style for the weight loss. Post surgery treatment is required so they have to meet the doctor every month. As other weight loss surgery it also consists of some side effects like lap band vomiting, nausea, band slippage, gall bladder etc.
