Claire Powell heads up Can Associates, home to such showbiz luminaries as Kerry Katona, Peter Andre, Nicola McLean and Elen Rivas. Claire wields an immense amount of influence over the media world and in particular the world of showbiz reporting.
It now appears that this influence extends to twitter where a parody account for her client, former drug addict Kerry Katona has been disabled following her reporting the account to twitter and her urging of her 36,000 followers to do the same. This request was retweeted by, amongst others, Sun and News Of the World showbiz reporter Dan Wootton to his 45,000 followers. Within hours, the account was disabled. The popular account @CurryKatona had around 7000 followers and was growing at a rate of 500 a day before twitter disabled the follower feed without any explanation. At this stage, the account still exists in the twittersphere but twitter quickly disables any follower request so no tweets from CurryKatona are seen in the follower’s timeline . The Curry Katona character, which has never claimed to be the real thing and always operated within twitter rules on parody accounts, was an insincere, neglectful mother and it appears that for whatever reason, twitter have decided to dictate what people see or don’t see and have viewed the joke feed as more of a threat than Kenneth Tong’s serious support for anorexia or any of the other hate groups operating on twitter.
Grant Appleton, creator of Curry Katona has asked that people judge the twitter feed for themselves and decide whether tweets like “Worried my kids are not eating enough fruit at the moment. Bought them an extra tube of fruit pastilles each just to make sure” and “Big day today so it’s a Red Bull breakfast for me and the kids. Don't worry though, the youngest two aren't allowed vodka in theirs” are cause for offence and suspension. Appleton goes on, “In a fair world, these accounts should die because people stop following them and not because some c-list showbiz agent decides they are out of her sphere of influence and don’t represent their carefully manufactured client’s profile ”. Curry’s supporters are beginning a campaign to Free Curry on twitter with the hashtag #freecurry. Let’s hope twitter listen and don’t allow another injustice.
As a final attempt to right this injustice, Claire Powell has now also been parodied on twitter as @ClaireAtCon.
