• Americans voted as having worst fashion sense in world, Italians as best
18 August 2010 – With Brits heading off all over the world for summer holidays, a new survey has shone a light onto holiday fashion disasters, reporting that socks and sandals are considered the worst holiday trend, while exposed beer bellies also feature. The report revealed that people from the Midlands have the worst dress sense.
The questioned 600 UK citizens on their thoughts on British holidaymakers and their clothing, with small swimming trunks on men, thongs on women, sunburn and ‘logo overload’ all considered big errors. One third said women wearing football shirts is unattractive and 20% also believe that men in football shirts is unfashionable.
Regarding which people in the UK have the worst dress sense, 1 in 5 said those people from Birmingham and the Midlands, followed by Newcastle and the North East, Scotland, Essex and then Manchester and the North West. People travelling from Yorkshire and East England were voted as the best dressed.
The survey was conducted by money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk and took in opinions on which nation’s tourists are the worst dressed. The USA’s tourists came in first for loud shirts as well as socks and sandals, with the Germans, the Greeks and then the British coming next. Italian tourists were voted the best dressed followed by the Spanish.
83% of people questioned (92% of men) considered that men dress worse than women even though men are more likely to buy new clothes (43%) for a holiday in comparison with women (32%). 57% of men and 68% of women said that they still wear holiday clothes that they have owned for more than five years.
When it came to reasons for buying new clothes, two thirds say they buy something if it looks good on them, and 20% say their primary factor is price. 14% spend less than £50 on a holiday wardrobe, while 70% spend between £50 and £200. 2% said they spend more than £500 for holiday clothing.
