As VAT Increases So Does Brits Money Worries According to New Survey

3 November 2010 – Results of a new national survey have revealed that 88% of British consumers are now more concerned about their personal finances than they had been the year before. 68% of respondents revealed that they are now up to £250 worse off each month; 15% stated they were up to £500 worse off each month. 1 in 10 of respondents stated they were more than £500 worse off this year every month.

The survey was conducted for DiscountVouchers.co.uk, in which more than 1,000 people in the UK were questioned. The survey showed that 57% of those who completed a survey were concerned about paying for this year’s Christmas; 47% had a concern about paying for utility bills; 46% were worried about paying for groceries; whilst the amount of people who had concerns about paying for their rent or mortgage was 40%; and 20% of respondents were worried about financing school and activity costs or their children.

Results also showed that money worries had people in the UK putting life-changing events on hold. 14% of respondents admitted that they were delaying having children until they were more confident about their own financial situation; 1 in 5 people were delaying changing their jobs; 27% chose not to buy a new home; and 13% said they were delaying getting married.

The amount of consumers who had worries over their partner’s or their own job security was 45%, which increased people’s money worries, 1 in 10 respondents revealed that to help their immediate cash flow they had applied for a payday loan or short term loan.

DiscountVouchers.co.uk, Simon Terry said “Over the last year, money for most people has become tight. Last year the recession was a hot topic to talk about, however it seems that this year it really is impacting Brits.”

Simon continues, “It is very important that we start to save money wherever possible, especially with increases in both energy and fuel and the VAT increase due in January, our survey showed an alarming 83% are worse off by up to $500 each month. The key to making money stretch further is to better manage finances, take the time to compare prices and use money off vouchers.”

Those who completed a survey said they were making cut backs on more areas in order to make ends meet. 82% revealed to save money they were eating out less at restaurants or pubs, 69% were cutting down on holidays; 70% of buying clothes; and 67% were making cut back on food shopping.

Other ways people were trying to make some savings included, 36% on using their mobile phone; 16% were making cut backs on car or house insurance; and 13% on children’s lessons or activities.

86% of consumers who completed a survey said they now use money off vouchers to help save money; 82% are now comparing prices from several retailers before they buy an item; 72% revealed they shop at a lower priced shop now; 27% of respondents haggle over prices. However, only 0.5% of respondents admitted to not trying to save cash or making cut backs.

The survey additionally showed that there is an increase in the amount of people trying to make extra cash, 56% said they were selling goods at car boot sales or via eBay; 1 in 5 people had an additional job; 3% now have a lodger; 7% were making and then selling clothes or food; and 2% said to make some extra money they were taking part in a clinical trial.
