iPhone From a User Perspective

Everywhere you look, more and more people are carrying around iPhones. I have used the iPhone 3GS for about 6 months now, so I thought I would share my impressions.

Carrying around an iPhone is a bit like carrying around a computer in your pocket. Apple is well known for making their computers easy and fun to use, and the iPhone is no different. Apple makes it simple to add your email accounts to the iPhone, so you can get push notifications of every email the instant it that arrives. The web browser is the best that I have ever used on a mobile phone. Full html pages with javascript will load in a snap, and it is easy and smooth to zoom in and out by pinching the screen or double-tapping it.

The camera is a 3 megapixel camera that supports videos as well. Once you've taken a picture or shot a video, the iPhone makes it simple to share them via email, or on YouTube, or on your favorite social media site.

The iPhone comes with a few other built in applications (Apps) that I use nearly everyday. The Maps program is powered by Google and uses GPS to instantly tell you where you are at any time. The Stocks App will let you keep on top of your favorite stocks, and the Weather App will allow you to never get caught in the rain again.

What really sets the iPhone apart from other smart phones is the App Store. In this store, you can choose from thousands upon thousands of applications to download (many of them free). Some of my favorite free Apps are Shazam, which will listen to a 10 second clip of music and tell you the song and artist information; the Kindle App, which allows me to access and read Kindle books on my iPhone; Pandora, which discovers new music for me based on my ratings of songs; and Facebook, which is a great mobile version that allows me to keep in touch with my friends. The App which I have been most addicted to lately is Words With Friends, which allows me to play Scrabble against my other friends who also have an iPhone.

iPhone is available from both the Vodafone and O2 networks. If you have never used an iPhone, you should at least go to an Apple store and play with one. I don't think I would ever want to go back to another brand.

Highly recommended.
