A team of Newcastle researchers discovered that the seaweed extract alginate is more effective than most weight loss supplements at limiting dietary fat absorption.
Scientists expect alginates could be be used as a food additive in a powdered form, and early experiments have seen powdered alginate added to bread.
Research into alginates shows they can act as an effective fat binder, limiting the amount of dietary fat that can be absorbed by the body. Despite a promising outlook, a Telegraph reporter admits that alginate is "almost as good as over-the-counter pill Alli" for weight loss.
As alginate research is in its early stages, many dieters are looking for a diet pill with the same or better effects that they can buy now. Alli has been sold over the counter in chemists such as boots and online since early 2007 and clinical studies show it can boost weight loss by 50%.
