Panter & Hall are proud to announce ‘Journeyman’, Alistair Little’s first solo show in three years, with work inspired by his love of 50s and 60s cinema and film noir. The new art exhibition, to be held at the gallery at 9 Shepherd Market, Mayfair, begins on Thursday 13th January 2011 and runs for two weeks. All work is available for purchase.
All are welcome to the private view on Thursday 13th January 2011 from 6pm – 8pm, which will be hosted by the gallery owners Tiffany Panter and Matthew Hall. Guests will enjoy Champagne. The artist will be present.
‘Journeyman’, Little’s second solo show, will celebrate the artist’s life-long love of cinema. In his oil on canvas and panel paintings, he uses strong colours to represent the inner turmoil of his subjects, evoking an intense ambience and sense of escapism. Within this mood, his work features themes of travel, transport and Americana.
Gallery owner Matthew Hall describes what visitors can expect to see: “In this exhibition Alistair expands his vision of a fictional post war America. His love of the film noir genre permeates every scene as he draws us into a celluloid world of shady characters, drifters and flawed heroes. His palette has brightened considerably in these paintings as the action seems to shift from the familiar twilight underworld of his earlier work to a Californian noon heat that bathes them in clear, sunlit colours. The effect remains spell binding, his talent for story telling is prodigious, every work fraught with narrative tension and unanswered questions”.
Artist Jack Vettriano and actress Michele Dotrice are both strong supporters of Little and hold his work in their private collections. Little was also commissioned by the celebrated actor, the late Edward Woodward, to paint his portrait. His work was also exhibited in the Caelum gallery in New York, as well as other galleries in London and Glasgow.
Little’s work has been highly commended by art critics and is much-admired by art lovers looking to invest in up-and-coming artists. Carol Cordrey says of his work, “Alistair Little’s paintings evoke a 1950’s era peppered with Chicago gangster or detective type figures and each one has a strong, though limited, narrative content as if they are details from much bigger pictures which reveal the full stories”. In 2008 Little was chosen to be the featured artist of Artists and Illustrators magazine.
Of his own art, Little says: “My work is influenced by a love of cinema, especially films of the 50s and 60s. Through the use of strong tones and high contrast I strive to achieve a feeling of mood and intensity, whilst leaving a question mark over the true meaning of the piece. My work is influenced primarily by 20th Century American illustrators, such as Harvey Dunn, Norman Rockwell and Dean Cornwell.”
'Journeyman' will be on view at Panter & Hall, 9 Shepherd Market, Mayfair, London W1J 7PF from Thursday 13th January to 28th January 2011 from 10am-6pm Mon-Fri, and by appointment on Saturdays. The private view will take place on Thursday 13th January from 6pm-8pm. Prices range from £2,000 to £6,500.
