At this time of year the vines look so brown and dead. You could be forgiven for thinking they had actually died. It doesn't take long until spring arrives and the sap starts to go through the plant and bring it back to life. Once the small green buds start to appear along the vinethe plant is in full swing again. By April the shoots and leaves will begin to appear and it will start to look like a proper plant again. Frost is a concern for commercial grape growers because it causes the flowers to drop, which then means the end of the grapes. Regions that are prone to a frost that this vital time of year use lots of different methods of ensuring that the flower buds stay on the plant.
In areas like Burgundy, they might use anything from portable heaters, fleece meshing, to something as extreme as the helicopter flying low over the vineyards which disturbs the air and rates of Frost.

It's a long time to wait until the grapes harvested in the autumn but in the meantime there's a lot to to do still. The wines that were fermented over the winter can now be bottled if they are to be drunk whilst fresh and young. Mobile bottling trucks can be seen across Europe at this time of year to ensure that all the wine is bottled up.
