Louis Oosthuizen, winner of the The Open 2010, could celebrate his £850,000 victory in style by splashing out on part of the historic country house where the idea for the first Open Championship and competitive golf was born.
Coodham House in Ayrshire, which was home to James Ogilvy Fairlie - the man who founded the first Open Championship 150 years ago, has been rebuilt from a ruin and turned into a series of luxury homes ranging in price from £330,000 to £750,000.
Now any dedicated golf fan, can walk in the footsteps of Fairlie and his friend Old Tom Morris by buying a slice of golfing history.
More than £10 million has been spent restoring the four-storey Victorian mansion from a derelict burnt-out shell into six exclusive apartments with three additional luxury homes created from the chapel and wings just minutes from Turnberry, Royal Troon and Prestwick golf courses.
Fairlie is credited as being the man who persuaded golf course architect Old Tom Morris to design Prestwick Golf Club in 1851 and of setting up the first ever British Open Championship at the same venue nine years later. He was also a leading character in the Royal & Ancient back in the early days and a mentor to Old Tom who acted as his caddy .
“We were aware that in renovating Coodham House we were acting as custodians of history and culture as well simply redesigning a magnificent property,” said Willy Findlater of CDP Architects.
Coodham House is built with historic pink sand-stone and is set in 90 acres of secluded grounds, with all the luxury, style and comforts of the 21st century.
Meticulous attention to detail, including the entrance pillars to the front of the house which have been replicated to the original design, ensure the original character and integrity of the building has been preserved.
Each apartment has been finished to the highest standards to include timber floors, deep oak skirting, hand crafted doors and windows, ornate Georgian-style plasterwork inspired by Robert Adam, designer kitchens, luxury bathrooms with Porcelanosa ceramic tiles, and state-of-the art technology to create cable free audio visual facilities, lighting, satellite TV and a video-voice security system.
“Coodham is unique in Scotland and there’s has been an overwhelming amount of interest from people in America, Canada , Singapore and Scandinavia as well as the UK,” said Lindy Leburn, VIP Sales Representative for Coodham.
”It combines the character of a 19th century mansion and a unique golfing heritage with contemporary quality and style.”
