• Christmas is a worry for 83% of Brits

24 November 2010 – Festive cheers is out the window it seems this year, according to a new survey from DiscountVouchers.co.uk – the money saving website – as 84% of Brits are going to spend less; 83% are worried about buying presents and the costs involved; and 26% have thought of cancelling any festivities completely.
The survey asked 1,000 people in the UK and found that expenditure is going to be down, one third will spend 25% less and 25% of people will reduce their spending by half (50%) this year, compared to last year.
Simon Terry from DiscountVouchers.co.uk said: “The worry for most of us at Christmas is not being helped by the VAT increase in January, job security worries and this is having an affect on expenditure this year, so saving money is paramount”.
Only 8.5% of people in the UK will be getting a bonus from work which would help pay for Christmas, but 42% of people are worrying about wondering about how to afford the parties, presents and entertainment that Christmas incurs.
To be able to pay for the cost of Christmas 15% of people are generating cash by selling gold or jewellery; short-terms amount to 3%; and 33% are using credit cards. For people who are using credit, the interest rate worries 35% of them, but it is the only option for them. Charity shops and eBay bought second hand gifts amounts to 25% of people's ideas for presents this Christmas.
Those who spend £500-£1,000 amount to 39% of the respondents; spending £250-£500 is 32% of people; 16% spend £1,000-£2,500; and around 2% pay more than £2,500 on Christmas.
Mr Terry added, “With the money you have, you need it to go as far as possible and using our vouchers, you can save money on most brands. Comparing prices and negotiating is also a great way to save some cash this Christmas”.
People in the UK like to spend money on their kids and the amount spent on children’s Christmas presents is as follows per child: one in ten spend £300-£500; 3% spend more than £1,000 on each child; 43% spend £50-£150 per child; and 22% spend £150-£300 on each child.
